If you’re starting a new job, a new life, or even just another new year, you know that looking your best can help you get started on the right foot. Here in Sacramento or anywhere else, droopy eyelids, a deeply wrinkled forehead or bags under your eyes can get in the way. They can make you look tired when you’re energetic, worn out when you’re eager to dig into a project and worried or angry when you’re anything but. Could blepharoplasty – plastic surgery for the eyes – make a real improvement? Many find that it does.
You should seriously consider a surgical eyelid procedure if:
- The skin of your upper eyelid has become droopy, especially if it hangs into your eyes
- You’ve lost the natural crease in your eyelid
- Your sagging eyelids actually obscure your vision, cutting down on your range of sight
- The bags under your eyes are becoming noticeably large, giving you a tired look
Upper Eyelid Sagging
As people age, an excessive amount of skin can grow in their upper eyelid area. Over the years, the muscles that lift the upper eyelid can stretch, leaving a drooping eyelid. In either event, your upper eyelids can actually block your full range of vision. This situation definitely calls for an upper blepharoplasty to remove excess skin and fat and tighten muscles as needed.
At times, excess skin in the forehead compounds the problem. This causes horizontal lines to form on your forehead and a vertical line to develop between your eyebrows. This can make you appear angry or worried anytime you’re not smiling. Excess forehead skin that sags into your upper eyelids can not only create a tired look but can further obscure your vision. If you experience these problems, your plastic surgeon will likely recommend both an upper blepharoplasty and a brow lift.
Lower Eyelid Aging – packing the bags under your eyes
As you age, your lower eyelids may often undergo unwelcome changes. The muscles and skin that support your eyelids weaken, causing the skin to sag. Once this happens, natural fat deposits under your eyes can move down. This creates noticeable bags under your eyes and a fatigued appearance.
To correct sagging upper eyelids, your surgeon will make incisions in the natural eyelid folds, in the upper eyelid creases and just below the lashes. Once they heal, these incisions will be practically unnoticeable.
Your plastic surgeon will then remove excess skin and fat from your upper eyelids. Depending on their condition, he or she may also trim the muscles to tighten them. Finally, your surgeon will close, smooth and reshape the skin using sutures and tissue adhesives.
If your upper blepharoplasty includes a brow lift, your plastic surgeon will often make inch-long incisions behind the hairline above each temple. He or she will then lift and relocate the tissues of the outer brows. Your surgeon will then use the upper eyelid incisions to lift the area between the eyebrows and eliminate frown lines.
Lower Blepharoplasty – losing your bags
While no one wants to see their luggage lost, you’ll be glad to lose the bags under your eyes. In lower blepharoplasty, depending on how much skin you need removed, your surgeon will hide incisions right below your lower lashes or inside the lower eyelid. He or she will then remove excess fat and tighten your lower eyelid skin.
In some cases, your plastic surgeon will redistribute fat to assure a smooth appearance. He or she may also tighten the muscles or use laser treatment to tighten lower eyelid skin. Finally, your surgeon will redrape skin and close your incisions with self-dissolving sutures or tissue adhesives. Most of the time any scars will be hard to see.
